Mariahilfer Strasse

Shared Space & Pedestrian Zone

Mariahilfer Strasse (length 1,500 m) in the 6th and 7th district of Vienna was redesigned to a modern shopping street.

For this purpose extensive preliminary investigations were carried out. Furthermore a contractor for the design project was sought in the scope of an architectural competition. A detailed road project ready for construction was elaborated in close cooperation with the authorities of the city of Vienna and the political representatives.

The objective of the redesign was to offer more space to the pedestrians for strolling, walking and lingering on the one hand and to decelerate car traffic and connect the two sides of the road on the other hand.

Mariahilfer Strasse won the 2017 Place Design Award. The EDRA Great Places Awards recognize professional and scientific excellence in environmental design and pay special attention to the relationship between the physical form of the built environment and human activity or experience.
