Herrengasse

Shared zone

Herrengasse between Freyung and Michaelerplatz was converted to a shared zone.

The privately financed road project represents an important axis between Freyung and Michaelerplatz. In this section several palaces, hotels, ministries, Vienna’s first high-rise building and the Loos house are located. Apart from Herrengasse, Fahnengasse and parts of Wallnerstrasse were reconstructed as well.

With the implementation of the project this area received an adequate surface for underlining historically important buildings. The existing traffic organization was modified to a shared zone, which created more areas for pedestrians and pavement cafés. In this connection the parking lanes were removed and the walking areas were respectively widened. The road surface was raised to the level of the pavement and remained in its current width.
